Komiža is considered the cradle of Adriatic fishing. For centuries, inhabitants lived almost exclusively from catching sardines and lobsters, leading to the development of the Falkuša, a fast sailing boat capable of traveling long distances to Palagruža island. The cityscape is dominated by the 16th-century Venetian castle, which now houses the Fishermen's Museum. Narrow alleys wind up the slope to the Church of St. Nicholas (Muster), offering a spectacular view over the bay. Komiža has a special, almost mystical atmosphere, enhanced by its proximity to the open sea and the rugged beauty of the Hum massif. It is the excellent place to eat freshly caught fish and enjoy seclusion from the world's hustle and bustle. An absolute must is the short boat trip to the neighboring island of Biševo to experience the magical blue light of the Modra Špilja.
The most pleasant time to visit is May–Jul.
