Sotará Volcano is a massive stratovolcano located in the Cauca department, approximately 25 kilometers south of the city of Popayán. It reaches an elevation of 4,580 meters and consists of three calderas that give the summit a complex profile. The volcano sits in a highly active geological zone and is part of the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes. Although no historical eruptions are documented, Sotará shows signs of unrest, such as increased seismicity and fumarole activity, leading to continuous monitoring. The slopes of the volcano are covered with ecologically valuable páramo, which serves as the primary water source for numerous communities in the region. The vegetation is adapted to extreme high-altitude conditions and hosts rare species such as the spectacled bear. Protecting this area is vital for maintaining the hydrological balance in southwestern Colombia. Due to its remote location, Sotará remains an important focus for geological research on the volcanic evolution of the region.
