El Morro del Tulcán (Colombia)

Weather…

El Morro del Tulcán is the premier archaeological site in Popayán, located in southwestern Colombia. It features a pre-Columbian truncated pyramid or mound, believed to have been constructed between 500 and 1600 AD by indigenous groups, most likely the Pubenenses. Archaeological excavations in the mid-20th century uncovered numerous burial chambers, ceramics, and stone tools, suggesting the site served as a vital ceremonial and funerary center. The mound provides a strategic lookout point over the 'White City' of Popayán and the surrounding Andean peaks. For decades, the site was marked by a controversial equestrian statue of the Spanish conquistador Sebastián de Belalcázar, erected in 1937 on top of the ancient structure. In 2020, indigenous Misak activists toppled the statue during national protests, reclaiming the space as a symbol of pre-colonial heritage and resistance. Currently, El Morro del Tulcán is protected as a site of national cultural interest, representing the enduring legacy of the region's first inhabitants and the ongoing dialogue about Colombia's historical memory.
