Tierradentro Archaeological Park (Colombia)

Weather…

The Tierradentro National Archaeological Park is located in the Cauca department within the Colombian Central Cordillera. The site is famous for its monumental hypogea, underground shaft tombs constructed between the 6th and 9th centuries AD by an unknown pre-Columbian culture. These tombs reach depths of up to seven meters and feature spiral staircases leading to central chambers supported by columns. Particularly fascinating are the geometric murals in red, black, and white that decorate the chamber walls and ceilings. These patterns likely reflect the social structure and religious cosmology of the builders. In addition to the hypogea, the park houses several stone statues that exhibit similarities to those found in San Agustín. Tierradentro provides invaluable insights into the burial practices and ancestral cults of South American indigenous peoples. Since 1995, the park has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
