Jamundí is a dynamically growing city in the Valle del Cauca Department, located just south of Cali. Founded in 1536 by Juan de Ampudia and Pedro de Añazco, the city is named after the indigenous Chieftain Jamundí, who ruled the territory at the time of the conquest. Originally an agricultural community famous for its rice and sugarcane fields, Jamundí has evolved in recent decades into a major residential hub and suburb within the Cali metropolitan area. Culturally, the city is renowned across Colombia as the 'World Capital of Cholado,' a traditional refreshment made of shaved ice, fresh fruits, and syrups that serves as a centerpiece of local identity. Geographically, Jamundí benefits from numerous rivers and natural waterfalls in the foothills of the Farallones de Cali mountains, making it a favorite spot for ecotourism.
