Popayán is the capital of the Cauca Department and one of Colombia's most prestigious historic cities. Founded in 1537 by Sebastián de Belalcázar, it is famously known as 'The White City' (La Ciudad Blanca) due to the uniformly whitewashed facades of its colonial center. During the colonial era, Popayán was a vital political, administrative, and religious hub, a legacy visible in its magnificent array of churches and aristocratic mansions. The city is internationally renowned for its Holy Week processions, which were designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2009. Additionally, Popayán was the first city to be named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, highlighting its rich and diverse culinary traditions. Geographically, it is located in the Pubenza Valley between the Western and Central Cordilleras of the Andes, near the Puracé volcano. Despite suffering significant damage in a 1983 earthquake, the historic district was meticulously restored and continues to exude a timeless colonial elegance.
