Tengchong is located near the Myanmar border and is a fascinating destination for nature and history lovers. The region is characterized by a dramatic volcanic landscape with nearly 100 extinct craters and the famous 'Hot Sea' geothermal park, where boiling water erupts directly from the earth. Visitors come here to relax in healing thermal baths and explore the unique geology. The historical Heshun Ancient Town is a highlight for cultural travelers. It was once an important stop on the Southwest Silk Road and has preserved its authentic character with traditional libraries and ancestral halls. In autumn, the nearby Ginkgo Village transforms into a golden sea, attracting photographers from all over Asia. Culinary-wise, Tengchong gives hearty Yunnanese dishes like 'Erkuai' rice cakes or spicy stews often flavored with local wild herbs. The mix of border culture and Han Chinese traditions is reflected in the architecture and customs, setting the city apart from other places in Yunnan. The best time to visit is from October to April when the weather is mild and dry. Tengchong has its own airport with connections to Kunming. Locally, it is best to travel by taxi or rental car between the spread-out attractions.
