Fenghuang (China)

Weather…

Fenghuang, named after the mythical Phoenix, is considered one of China's most beautiful ancient towns. Its most striking features are the 'Diaojiaolou', traditional wooden stilt houses that hang directly over the Tuo River. Visitors come here to enjoy the unique atmosphere, which feels almost surreal at night when the entire riverfront is bathed in colorful lights. A boat trip on the river gives the best perspective of the historic architecture. The town is a melting pot of ethnic cultures, particularly the Miao and Tujia people. Women in traditional costumes are often seen selling handmade silver jewelry and colorful textiles. Key sights include the Hong Bridge and the former residence of the writer Shen Congwen. The nature surrounding Fenghuang is characterized by green mountains and misty forests, giving the town a mystical charm. Culinarily, one should definitely try 'Blood Duck,' a local Miao specialty. Access has become easier today with high-speed trains connecting Fenghuang to Changsha. The best time to visit is spring (April to June) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild and the river's water level is convenient. Despite its tourist popularity, Fenghuang has maintained its rustic charm.
