Hkakabo Razi (Myanmar (Burma))

Weather…

Hkakabo Razi, standing at 5,881 meters, is the highest mountain in Myanmar and the highest peak in Southeast Asia. Located in the far north of Kachin State on the border between Myanmar and Tibet, it is part of the Eastern Himalayan range. Due to its extreme remoteness and harsh climatic conditions, the mountain is regarded as one of the most difficult peaks to access in the world. The region features pristine subtropical rainforests, alpine meadows, and permanent glaciers that harbor extraordinary biodiversity. The first official ascent of the main summit was achieved only in 1996 by Takashi Ozaki of Japan and Nyima Gyaltsen of Nepal. The mountain is the centerpiece of the eponymous national park, established to protect rare flora and fauna, such as the red panda and various orchid species. Reaching the summit requires a multi-week expedition through dense jungle terrain before the actual rock and ice faces are reached.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching the base is an arduous journey, typically starting from the town of Putao in northern Kachin State. It involves days of travel through dense jungle and remote villages.
📅
Best season
November to February is generally considered the most feasible time for an expedition, offering slightly drier conditions. However, weather in this region is notoriously volatile.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The environment is intensely challenging, transitioning from humid tropical jungles to glaciated alpine peaks. Trails are often non-existent or heavily overgrown, requiring route-finding.
🎒
What to bring
An extensive array of technical mountaineering equipment and robust jungle survival gear is strictly required. Heavy-duty waterproof clothing and cold-weather systems are non-negotiable.
🅿️
Parking
There is no conventional parking; transport ends in Putao or nearby roadheads. From there, all movement toward the mountain relies entirely on foot travel and local porters.
⚠️
Safety
This is one of the most perilous regions due to extreme isolation, treacherous terrain, and disease risks in the jungle. Only highly experienced, fully supported expeditions should attempt this.
⏱️
Time needed
A complete expedition to the mountain's vicinity and back takes several weeks. It is definitely not a destination for day trips or casual sightseeing.
