Weizhou is located about 21 nautical miles south of Beihai and is a paradise for independent travelers. The island was formed by violent volcanic eruptions, which can be seen today in the Volcanic Geology Park at Crocodile Mountain. There, visitors can walk over solidified lava flows and admire the rugged beauty of the cliffs while the azure waters of the Gulf of Tonkin crash against the rocks. A cultural curiosity in the middle of Shenghua village is the Notre Dame Catholic Church. Built in the 19th century by French missionaries entirely out of coral stone, it is one of the few Gothic churches in this region of China. The blend of European architecture and a tropical island setting gives the place a very special atmosphere. The island is laid-back. Since cars are restricted for tourists, most visitors explore the island on rented e-bikes. Banana plantations and small fishing villages are everywhere. At beaches like 'Shell Beach' or 'Colorful Beach,' you can witness fantastic sunrises and buy fresh seafood directly from local markets. The island is only accessible by ferry from Beihai (approx. 70-90 minutes). The best time to visit is from May to October, though you should keep an eye on the typhoon season in late summer. Since daily visitor numbers are limited, it is advisable to book ferry tickets and accommodation in advance.
