Qiongzhou Strait (China)

Weather…

The Qiongzhou Strait, also known as the Hainan Strait, is a strategic body of water separating the Leizhou Peninsula of Guangdong from Hainan Island. Measuring approximately 80 kilometers in length and an average of 30 kilometers in width, it connects the Gulf of Tonkin to the South China Sea. The strait was formed by tectonic subsidence and volcanic activity during the Quaternary period, evidenced by the volcanic terrain found along its northern and southern coasts. Water depth in the channel ranges from 40 to 120 meters, with strong tidal currents and frequent seasonal typhoons complicating maritime traffic. Historically a major obstacle for trade, the strait is now bridged by the world's first high-speed rail ferry system, linking Hainan's rail network to the mainland. Plans for a fixed link, such as a bridge or tunnel, have been studied for decades but remain challenging due to the region's high seismic activity and complex deep-water conditions.
