Mbouda sits on the Bamboutos Highlands at about 1 500 metres elevation and, with around 110 000 inhabitants, is one of the most important market towns in the West Region. The pleasantly cool mountain climate and fertile volcanic soils make the area one of Cameroon's most productive vegetable belts: tomatoes, potatoes, carrots and leeks leave Mbouda daily for Yaoundé, Douala and even Gabon. The Marché de Mbouda is one of West Africa's largest agricultural collection hubs and the economic heart of the town. The population is predominantly Bamiléké, with traditional chieftaincies such as Bamendjinda and Babadjou. Mbouda is also the gateway to the Bamboutos Mountains with peaks over 2 700 metres and to hiking targets such as the Mont Lefo volcanic crater. Construction, joinery, cheese production and a thriving mud-brick industry round out the agricultural economy.
