Bandjoun is a culturally outstanding town in Koung-Khi Department of the West Region, sitting at about 1 400 metres elevation around 25 kilometres south of Bafoussam. Its roughly 50 000 inhabitants belong to the Bandjoun Bamiléké subgroup, whose royal palace is one of Cameroon's most beautiful and best-preserved traditional chieftaincies. The palace, a striking compound of bamboo, mud and intricately carved wooden pillars, hosts the Musée des Civilisations and holds UNESCO candidate status for its complete Bamiléké cultural heritage. The economy rests on coffee, maize, beans, sweet potatoes and a growing handicraft industry. Highlights include the Bandjoun royal palace, the Bandjoun art centre, the annual Mboo dance festival and the nearby Banékane waterfalls. The mild plateau climate favours plantation agriculture and makes Bandjoun one of the greenest and most culturally rich places in western Cameroon.
