Dschang sits on a plateau at 1 400 metres elevation in the West Region and is, thanks to its mild climate, fertile volcanic soils and intellectual tradition, one of the most desirable cities to live in across Cameroon. With about 100 000 inhabitants, it is home to the University of Dschang, one of the country's most respected higher-education institutions specialising in agriculture, forestry and tropical ecology. The Centre Climatique de Dschang has been a colonial-era retreat with a waterfall and garden complex. The economy is based on arabica coffee, tea, potatoes and pig farming. Highlights include the Musée des Civilisations dedicated to Bamiléké culture, Lake Lefoua with its sacred crocodile and the nearby Mami Wata waterfalls. The city is a hub between the western highlands and the Anglophone regions.
