Getting there
The Tatai River is best accessible via National Road 48, which connects Koh Kong with Phnom Penh. The Tatai Bridge usually serves as the starting point, where visitors can rent boats to reach the upriver lodges or the Tatai Waterfalls.
Best season
A visit is possible year-round, with the period from November to February offering milder weather for jungle activities. In the rainy season from June to October, the river carries a lot of water and the jungle is particularly green, though heavy showers can affect boating.
Terrain & paths
The river's surroundings are characterized by dense rainforest and mangroves that reach right down to the shore. Exploration is mostly done from the water by kayak or boat, as the terrain away from the few paths is very steep and difficult to traverse.
What to bring
Waterproof bags for cameras and electronics are very important while boating, as is a good insect repellent against mosquitoes. Lightweight, quick-drying clothing and non-slip sandals or water shoes are well-suited for the humid environment along the river.
Parking
Parking is available near the Tatai Bridge at small food stalls or private properties, where you can park for a small fee. It is advisable not to leave valuables in the car if you are going out on a boat for an extended period of time.
Safety
Always wear a life jacket while kayaking, especially near the waterfalls where the current can be strong. Watch out for slippery rocks on the riverbank and avoid staying out on open water during heavy thunderstorms.
Time needed
A full day is enough to explore the river and the waterfalls, but two to three days allow for a calmer experience in one of the riverside lodges. This time permits exploring smaller tributaries by kayak and observing the wildlife more intensely.
