Sisophon, officially known as Serei Saophoan, is the capital of Banteay Meanchey Province in northwestern Cambodia. The city serves as a strategic transportation hub where National Roads 5 and 6 intersect, providing vital links to Thailand, Battambang, and Siem Reap. Historically, the region was frequently contested between Cambodia and Thailand before being permanently integrated into Cambodian territory. A few kilometers north lies the massive Banteay Chhmar temple complex, an architectural masterpiece from the era of King Jayavarman VII. Today, Sisophon is a thriving commercial center that benefits significantly from cross-border trade with Thailand, particularly through the nearby Poipet gateway. Its economy is further bolstered by agriculture and the restored northern railway line, which connects the city to the capital, Phnom Penh.
