Pailin is a city in western Cambodia located at the northern edge of the Cardamom Mountains, very close to the international border with Thailand. Historically, the area was famous for its rich deposits of gemstones, particularly rubies and sapphires, which sparked a massive mining boom during the late 20th century. This mineral wealth unfortunately also funded the Khmer Rouge for many years, as Pailin was one of their final strongholds until a peace agreement was reached in 1996. Today, the city is transitioning from its turbulent past toward an economy based on agriculture, with the production of longans, corn, and cassava replacing gemstone mining. Wat Phnom Yat is the most significant cultural landmark in the city, a Burmese-style temple perched on a hill that has views of the surrounding mountains and forests. The local culture reflects a unique blend of Khmer and Thai influences, which can be seen in the architecture, traditional dances, and the regional dialect of its inhabitants.
