Koh Kong is a coastal city located in southwestern Cambodia, serving as the capital of Koh Kong Province and a vital gateway near the border with Thailand. The city is separated from the Thai province of Trat by the Kah Bpow River and was historically isolated from the rest of Cambodia until the completion of the Koh Kong Bridge in 2002. It is surrounded by the Cardamom Mountains, which host some of the largest remaining rainforests in Southeast Asia and provide habitat for numerous endangered species. The nearby Peam Krasop Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for having one of the most extensive and well-preserved mangrove forests in the region, featuring an elevated wooden walkway for visitors. Ecotourism has become a primary economic driver, with attractions like the Tatai Waterfall and various island resorts drawing travelers interested in sustainable nature experiences. The city also functions as a Special Economic Zone, facilitating international trade and industrial development between Cambodia and neighboring Thailand.
