Malagarasi River (Burundi)

Weather…

The Malagarasi is one of the most significant rivers in East Africa, originating in the mountains of Burundi before flowing into Tanzania and eventually discharging into Lake Tanganyika. With a total length of approximately 475 kilometers, it forms a complex system of tributaries, marshes, and floodplains. In Burundi, it flows through the southeastern part of the country, shaping the landscape with its vast water volumes and fertile valleys. The river is vital for regional biodiversity, as its gallery forests and wetlands provide sanctuary for numerous animal species, including hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of waterfowl. Geologically, the Malagarasi is older than Lake Tanganyika itself and was originally part of a river network belonging to the Congo Basin. The Malagarasi-Muyovozi wetlands are internationally protected as a Ramsar site to preserve this unique ecosystem. The river also plays a central role in the local economy through fishing and as a transport route in remote regions. Despite its importance, deforestation and agricultural runoff threaten the water quality and fish stocks of the river.

Parking
Parking is usually handled informally within the boundaries of local riverside communities. Always ask for permission from village leaders before leaving your vehicle unattended near the river.
