Nyakazu Fault

The Nyakazu Fault, popularly known as the 'Break of Nyakazu,' is a dramatic geological escarpment located in the Rutana Province of southeastern Burundi. It represents a sudden drop-off at the edge of the Nkoma plateau, falling more than 100 meters into the Kumoso Lowlands. The fault line is characterized by unique rock formations, including vertical pillars and 'stone chimneys' sculpted by millennia of erosion and tectonic activity. Beyond its geological significance, Nyakazu is a site of immense historical importance for Burundi; it was the final stronghold where King Mwezi Gisabo resisted German colonial forces in 1903. The remains of a German military post can still be found at the site, perched on the edge of the cliffs. Currently, the area is preserved as a natural monument, offering some of the most expansive panoramic views in East Africa, stretching toward the Tanzanian border. It serves as a key site for both geological research and cultural heritage tourism in the region.
