Musongati Nickel Mine (Burundi)

Weather…

The Musongati Nickel Mine, located in the Rutana Province of southeastern Burundi, represents one of the most significant unexploited nickel deposits in the world. Estimates suggest that the site contains approximately 150 to 180 million tonnes of ore, which accounts for nearly 6% of the known global nickel reserves. In addition to nickel, the polymetallic deposit holds substantial quantities of cobalt, copper, and platinum group metals such as platinum and palladium. The project is managed by Burundi Mining Metallurgy (BMM) and is considered a cornerstone for the country's future industrial development and economic diversification. Infrastructure challenges, particularly the need for reliable rail transport to the coast and a stable high-capacity power supply, have historically slowed full-scale extraction. Once fully operational, the mine is expected to transform Burundi into a major player in the global battery metal supply chain. The site's development remains a high priority for the national government to attract foreign direct investment and create thousands of local jobs.
