Rumonge is located in southwestern Burundi on the shores of Lake Tanganyika and is known as the 'capital of palm oil.' The city benefits from its tropical climate and the fertile coastal plain, which allows for the large-scale cultivation of oil palms. Rumonge is the country's fourth-largest city and a major economic driver due to its busy port and thriving fishing industry. Lake Tanganyika provides rich stocks of Ndagala (freshwater sardines), which are prized throughout the country. Historically, Rumonge was an important post on Arab-Swahili trade routes, which continues to influence the city's cultural and religious diversity today. Nearby is the Kigwena Forest Reserve, a rare lowland rainforest famous for its primates and birds. The city is a popular recreational spot with lakeside beaches that attract both local tourists and visitors from Bujumbura. Due to its location on the highway to Tanzania, Rumonge is also a strategic trade hub in southern Burundi.
