Rusizi Delta

The Rusizi Delta is situated at the confluence of the Rusizi River and Lake Tanganyika, approximately 15 kilometers north of Bujumbura. It serves as the centerpiece of the Rusizi National Park, which was formally established in 1980 to safeguard its unique wetland environment. Spanning about 90 square kilometers, the delta features an intricate network of papyrus swamps, reed beds, and acacia groves that are seasonally submerged. This ecosystem provides a vital sanctuary for large populations of hippopotamuses and Nile crocodiles, which are iconic symbols of the park.
