The Mpanda River is a vital waterway in western Burundi and a major tributary of the Rusizi River, which flows into Lake Tanganyika. Originating in the high-rainfall central highlands, the river winds through Bubanza and Bujumbura Rural provinces. It holds central importance for the Burundian economy, as its waters supply extensive irrigation projects in the Imbo Plain, crucial for rice cultivation. In 2021, the Mpanda hydroelectric power station was commissioned, making a significant contribution to the national energy grid. Ecologically, the river valley provides a habitat for diverse wildlife, including crocodiles and numerous bird species. During the rainy season, the Mpanda's volume increases dramatically, carrying large amounts of sediment down into the lowlands. The riverbanks are densely populated, as the river forms the basis for local fishing and farming livelihoods. Despite its economic exploitation, protecting the riverbanks and maintaining water quality remains a primary challenge for regional development.
