Rusizi National Park, located just outside the capital city of Bujumbura, is one of Burundi's most accessible and popular wildlife reserves. The park is divided into two main sections: the Palmeraie, characterized by acacia trees and shrubs, and the Delta, where the Rusizi River flows into Lake Tanganyika. The Delta is particularly renowned for its populations of hippopotamuses and large Nile crocodiles. It is also a paradise for birdwatchers, hosting hundreds of avian species, including pelicans, flamingos, and the rare African skimmer. Visitors can explore the park through guided boat tours along the river, which offer close-up views of the aquatic wildlife. The dry season, from June to September, is the optimal time for wildlife viewing, as animals congregate around the water sources.
