Targovishte is situated at the northeastern foot of the Preslav Mountain and has a long-standing reputation as a significant trading hub. The city's name is derived from the Slavic word for "marketplace," highlighting the centuries-old tradition of its famous spring trade fairs (Eski Dzhumaya). During the 19th century, it evolved into an essential center for crafts and commerce within the Ottoman Empire. A major archaeological landmark nearby is the ancient and medieval fortress city of Missionis, often referred to as a key historical site in northern Bulgaria. The historic Varosha district features well-preserved houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period and the beautiful Church of the Assumption. Today, Targovishte is a modern industrial center, particularly noted for its large-scale glass manufacturing and quality wine production. Its strategic location along the main road connecting Sofia and Varna makes it a vital transport link. The city maintains a lively cultural scene with active theaters and museums dedicated to its local history.
