Gabrovo is situated at the northern foot of the Balkan Mountains and is widely celebrated as the international capital of humor and satire. During the 19th century, the city emerged as a powerful industrial center, earning the nickname "the Bulgarian Manchester" due to its thriving textile and leather industries. A major cultural landmark is the Etar Ethnographic Open-Air Museum, which preserves traditional Bulgarian crafts and water-powered machinery. Gabrovo holds a significant place in Bulgarian education history, as it was the site of the first modern secular school founded by Vasil Aprilov in 1835. The city's geography is characterized by its long, narrow stretch along the Yantra River, serving as a gateway to the Central Balkan National Park. Today, Gabrovo remains a center for mechanical engineering and education, home to a prominent technical university and the unique Museum of Humor and Satire.
