Preslav Ruins (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Veliki Preslav served as the second capital of the First Bulgarian Empire from 893 to 972, reaching its zenith during the reign of Tsar Simeon the Great. This era is hailed as the 'Golden Age' of Bulgarian culture, during which Preslav became one of the most magnificent cities in Eastern Europe, rivaling Constantinople. The city's architecture was characterized by monumental stone structures, including the Great Palace and the legendary Golden Church (Round Church), renowned for its gilded domes and intricate mosaics. Preslav was the seat of the Preslav Literary School, the most active center of Old Church Slavonic literature and translation. A unique artistic contribution of the city was the Preslav painted ceramics, used for decorative tiles and icons, most famously seen in the icon of St. Theodore. The city's prominence waned after it was captured by the Byzantines in 971 and subsequently sacked by the Kievan Rus. The ruins today offer a profound glimpse into the sophistication of medieval Bulgarian civilization.
