Troyan (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Troyan is located in the heart of the Central Balkan Mountains and is inextricably linked with two things: the Troyan Monastery and ceramics. The Monastery of the Assumption, the third-largest in the country, is situated about 10 km outside the city. It is famous for its wonderful architecture and the memorable frescoes by Zahari Zograf. It also served as an important spiritual center and a refuge for the national hero Vasil Levski. The town itself is the heart of Bulgarian pottery. The local Museum of Crafts provides a comprehensive overview of the 'Troyan School' of ceramics, known for its distinctive brown and yellow patterns. Visitors can try their hand at pottery in numerous workshops. Troyan is also the center of plum production, Troyan plum rakia is considered one of the best in the country and holds a protected geographical indication. Nature lovers value Troyan as a starting point for the Central Balkan National Park. The nearby Beklemeto Pass gives ski slopes in winter and hiking trails in summer. The village of Oreshak, with its large arts and crafts exhibition, is also worth a visit. The best time to visit is summer for hiking or September for the 'Plum Festival.'
