Popovo, frequently referred to as the "White Town," is located in northeastern Bulgaria within the Targovishte Province on the banks of the Cherni Lom River. The town earned its nickname from the light-colored limestone hills and the traditionally whitewashed houses that characterize its skyline. It serves as a significant regional hub for trade and the processing of agricultural goods harvested from the fertile Danubian Plain. Popovo's history is ancient, with the nearby late Roman fortress of Kovachevsko Kale standing as one of the most prominent archaeological sites in the region. Known as Pop-Köy during the Ottoman era, the settlement experienced rapid modernization following Bulgaria's liberation and was officially granted city status in 1883. Today, Popovo features a well-developed infrastructure, numerous cultural venues, and a spirited central square. The city celebrates its official holiday on June 10th each year with a variety of public events. The surrounding rolling hills provide beautiful natural scenery, great for outdoor activities and relaxation.
