Shumen Fortress (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Shumen Fortress, situated on the Shumen Plateau in northeastern Bulgaria, has a history spanning over 3,000 years. The site was first fortified by Thracians in the early Iron Age and was subsequently utilized and expanded by Romans, Byzantines, and Bulgarians. Due to its commanding position, it served as a crucial strategic outpost controlling the mountain passes. During the First and Second Bulgarian Empires, Shumen evolved into a significant military, administrative, and religious hub. The fortress reached its architectural peak between the 12th and 14th centuries, featuring thick defensive walls and numerous towers. Its historical significance came to an end in 1444 during the crusade of King Wladyslaw III of Poland, when the fortress was captured and destroyed by crusader forces. Today, the partially reconstructed ruins function as an open-air museum, showcasing the foundations of medieval churches, dwellings, and impressive defensive structures.
