Batenberg in the Veliko Tarnovo Province, today known as Novograd, is a historically significant settlement situated at the confluence of the Yantra River and the Danube. Founded in 1884, it was named after Prince Alexander I of Battenberg, marking it as a model project of the newly independent Bulgarian state. Its strategic location on the banks of the Danube made it an important hub for trade and river transportation in the late 19th century. Historically, the Veliko Tarnovo region is the cradle of Bulgarian statehood, and the establishment of Batenberg aimed to strengthen the northern borders economically. Nearby archaeological sites reveal the remains of ancient fortresses that guarded the Danube for centuries. The village's layout still reflects the planned urbanization of the Battenberg era, featuring organized streets and historic public structures. Today, the settlement is a peaceful community known for its fishing traditions and productive agriculture. The historical connection to the Prince remains a point of pride for the local residents, linking them to the origins of modern Bulgaria.
