Belene is a town in northern Bulgaria, situated on the right bank of the Danube River, and is best known for the Persina Nature Park, which includes the largest group of Danube islands in Bulgaria. The town features a long history dating back to the Roman fortress of Dimum, the remains of which can still be visited today. A darker chapter of local history is associated with Persin Island, which housed the Belene labor camp during the communist era, now serving as a memorial site. In more recent times, Belene gained international attention as the site for a planned but controversial nuclear power plant, whose construction has been halted several times. The town's economy is closely tied to the river and agriculture, with fishing and viticulture playing significant roles. Belene is also a major Catholic center in Bulgaria, reflected in the impressive architecture of its local churches. Persina Nature Park provides unique opportunities for birdwatching and ecotourism within its pristine floodplain landscapes. The town celebrates its annual festival on September 8th with traditional markets and cultural performances.
