Named after Khan Omurtag, a prominent ruler of the First Bulgarian Empire, the town was known as Osman Pazar until its renaming in 1934. It serves as the administrative hub of the Omurtag Municipality and is a vital transit point on the main highway linking the capital, Sofia, with the Black Sea port of Varna. The area's rich historical heritage dates back to Thracian and Roman times, evidenced by various archaeological discoveries in the vicinity. A significant local landmark is the aviation museum dedicated to Aleksandar Aleksandrov, the second Bulgarian cosmonaut and a native of the town.
