Pobiti Kamani
Pobiti Kamani, popularly known as 'The Stone Forest,' is one of Bulgaria's most enigmatic natural wonders, located just 18 km west of Varna. It consists of hundreds of limestone columns scattered across a desert-like landscape of 50 square kilometers. These structures, some reaching up to 7 meters in height and 2 meters in thickness, date back about 50 million years to the Tertiary period when the area was at the bottom of a sea. Uniquely, most of these columns are hollow and filled with sand, a geological rarity found in only a few places worldwide. Scientists still debate their origin, with theories ranging from methane seepages to coral formations. The columns are organized into several groups, with the 'Central-South' group being the most impressive. Many formations have been given imaginative names like 'The Camel,' 'The Guardian,' or 'The Stone Forest Family.' Local lore attributes mystical energy to the site, particularly within a circular stone arrangement where visitors often stop to meditate. The arid environment supports rare desert flora and specialized reptile species. The site is easily accessible by car or bus from Varna. A small visitor center provides geological context and maps of the area. The best time to visit is late afternoon when the low sun casts dramatic shadows, enhancing the mystical atmosphere. Since there is very little shade, sun protection is essential during summer. Pobiti Kamani is a UNESCO tentative site and provides a stark, beautiful contrast to the nearby Black Sea beaches.
