Žepče Old Town
The Žepče Old Town (Stari grad Žepče) has a long history, with its first recorded mention dating back to 1458. Located along the Bosna River, the town was a vital junction for trade between Central Europe and the Adriatic coast. During the medieval period, Žepče was part of the royal Bosnian domains and featured a fortification that protected the river crossing. Under Ottoman rule, the town flourished as an administrative center (Kaza), characterized by typical oriental architecture, mosques, and artisan quarters. A notable historical event was the presence of Prince Eugene of Savoy during his military campaign in 1697, highlighting the town's strategic significance. The architecture of the old town still reflects traditional Bosnian styles, although many structures were damaged during 20th-century conflicts. Preservation efforts focus on maintaining the surviving historical buildings and revitalizing the town center. Žepče remains a regional cultural hub where various historical influences converge.
