Veliki Kastel Castle (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Veliki Kastel is an extraordinary cave fortress situated above the source of the Bistrica river (Duman) in Livno. This medieval defensive structure was carved directly into the steep cliffs of Mount Bašajkovac, integrating natural caverns into a complex system of walls and loopholes. The fortress likely dates back to the 14th century and was further expanded during the Ottoman period to monitor the town of Livno and the expansive Livanjsko field. Its unique position made it nearly inaccessible to attackers while providing defenders with a panoramic view of the entire region. Veliki Kastel is a key component of Livno's larger fortification system, which includes several towers in the lower town. The architecture showcases a masterful blend of natural geology and human craftsmanship. Today, the site is a protected National Monument, offering visitors a spectacular view of the Duman spring and Livno's historic core.
