Tešanj Fortress
Tešanj Fortress is one of the most imposing and well-preserved fortifications in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It covers an area of approximately 6,000 square meters on a prominent rocky outcropping that overlooks the deep river valley of the Tešanjka. The origins of the stronghold trace back to the time of Illyrian tribes and the Romans, but it reached its historical significance during the Middle Ages. During the reign of the Kotromanić dynasty in the 14th century, Tešanj became a key strategic position. A unique feature of its architecture is the massive polygonal defensive tower, the so-called Krnja Tower, which, together with the extensive outer walls, formed the backbone of the defense. During the Ottoman era, the castle was expanded with cannon emplacements and contained a small town and a mosque within its walls. A special feature of the fortress is its own freestanding clock tower (Sahat-kula), one of the few in Bosnia. Even the famous Habsburg general Prince Eugene of Savoy, who penetrated deep into Bosnia in 1697, failed to capture this defiant fortress.
