Tang Valley (Bhutan)

Weather…

The Tang Valley is one of the most remote of the four Bumthang valleys. It is a narrow, rugged landscape bisected by the Tang Chhu river. The valley is famous for Mebar Tsho, the 'Burning Lake,' a sacred pool in the river where the treasure revealer Pema Lingpa is said to have discovered sacred scriptures and artifacts in the 15th century. This site is an important pilgrimage destination. The valley also houses the Ogyen Choling Museum, a privately-run museum in a former manor that provides an excellent insight into the traditional lifestyle of Bhutanese noble and land-owning families. Agriculture in the valley is challenging due to the altitude and rougher terrain. The people subsist mainly on livestock farming, particularly yaks and sheep. The pristine nature and spiritual significance make the Tang Valley a unique place for visitors seeking seclusion.

⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain features broad valley floors, steep rocky gorges, and mountain paths situated at considerable altitudes. Hiking trails often follow the river and require steady footing on uneven, stony ground.
🎒
What to bring
Warm layers of clothing are indispensable due to the cool mountain air and high elevation. Sturdy hiking boots with good grip and sun protection for intense radiation should definitely be part of your gear.
