Malmedy is located in the province of Liège at the confluence of the Warche and Warchenne rivers and is part of the German-speaking Community of Belgium, although it has a mixed linguistic history. The town is famous for the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, Saint-Paul, and Saint-Quirin, which was once the church of a significant Benedictine abbey. Culturally, Malmedy is best known for the 'Cwarmê,' a centuries-old carnival with unique masks and traditional costumes, listed as intangible cultural heritage. During World War II, the town unfortunately became known for the 'Malmedy Massacre,' where US prisoners of war were murdered by the Waffen-SS; a memorial in Baugnez commemorates this tragedy today. Geographically, Malmedy is a gateway to the High Fens-Eifel Nature Park, making it a popular starting point for hiking and winter sports. The local economy relies on tourism, the paper industry, and crafts. The town's architecture shows an interesting mix of local blue stone buildings and influences from the Rhineland. Annually, Malmedy also attracts motorsport fans, as the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is located just a few kilometers away.
