Houthalen-Helchteren is an extensive and green merged municipality in the Belgian province of Limburg, deeply rooted in the region's coal-mining past. The centerpiece of the industrial heritage is the old Houthalen colliery complex, with its two distinctive, preserved headframes and the main building that today serves as an ultra-modern cleantech center called "GreenVille." This transformation from a fossil fuel site to a green technology hub is symbolic of the municipality's development. Nature lovers are drawn to the Kelchterhoef nature reserve, a former manorial estate with ponds and ancient avenues, which is today a first-class recreational area. In addition, Houthalen-Helchteren is home to a nationally known amusement park (Hengelhoef) and a unique automobile museum, which presents one of the largest collections of historical vehicles in the Benelux countries.
