Water temperature…
Signal de Botrange is the highest point in Belgium, standing at 694 meters above sea level. To reach the symbolic height of 700 meters, a small artificial hill with steps called the 'Baltia Tower' was constructed on the summit. This landmark is the entrance to the High Fens (Hautes Fagnes) Nature Reserve, a vast plateau of peat bogs, heathland, and marshes that constitutes Belgium's oldest and most precious nature park. The environment here is sub-alpine, characterized by rare flora and a stark, beautiful landscape often covered in mist. Hiking is the main activity, with wooden boardwalks (caillebotis) stretching across the marshes to allow safe exploration of the sensitive environment. The area is home to unique wildlife, including black grouse and rare migratory birds. During winter, Botrange becomes the national center for cross-country skiing, offering the most reliable snow conditions in the country. The nearby Nature Center (Maison du Parc) provides educational exhibits and guided walks. The summit features a cozy brasserie where visitors can enjoy local ales and hearty Walloon dishes. Botrange is best accessed by car from Eupen or Malmedy. The most atmospheric times to visit are in early autumn, when the heather blooms in shades of purple, or in winter, when the entire plateau is transformed into a silent, snowy wilderness.
