Citadel of Namur (Belgium)

Weather…

The Citadel of Namur stands as one of Europe's most impressive and historically significant fortifications, strategically perched on a rocky outcrop at the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers. Its origins trace back to the Roman era, but its transformation into a formidable stronghold began in earnest under the Counts of Namur in the 10th century. Over the following centuries, the citadel was expanded and redesigned by some of military history's most renowned engineers, including Vauban and his Dutch rival Menno van Coehoorn, reflecting the shifting power dynamics between the Spanish, Austrian, and French empires. The fortress is divided into three main sections: the Donjon at the lower level, which contains the medieval roots, the Médiane in the middle, and the vast Terra Nova at the summit, built to withstand modern artillery. Napoleon famously dubbed the citadel the termite mound of Europe due to its extensive network of underground tunnels, which stretch for over seven kilometers and provided essential protection and strategic mobility for garrisoned troops during numerous sieges. Today, the site serves as a vital cultural landmark, offering a deep dive into Walloon military heritage through its visitor center and guided tours. Visitors can explore the cavernous underground passages, visit the artisan perfumery housed within its walls, and enjoy dramatic panoramas of the Meuse valley and the historic city center of Namur below.
