Fosses-la-Ville is a pleasant town in the province of Namur, in Belgium's Walloon region. Its history is deeply connected to the Irish monk Saint Foillan, who founded a monastery here in the 7th century. The town's centerpiece is the magnificent Saint Feuillen Collegiate Church, a remarkable example of Romanesque and Gothic architecture with an impressive crypt. The town has retained much of its medieval charm, with narrow streets and old stone houses. The town is especially famous for its Laetare Carnival, one of the oldest and most renowned in Belgium. The main figures of the carnival are the 'Chinels', colorful, humpbacked dancers whose costumes are reminiscent of Commedia dell'arte characters. This three-day festivity attracts thousands of visitors each year. For nature lovers, the nearby Lake of Bambois features a beautiful spot for walking, fishing, and relaxation. Fosses-la-Ville is easily accessible from Namur and Charleroi, making it a good day-trip destination. The best time to visit is during the carnival in spring or during the summer months to enjoy the historic ambiance and natural surroundings.
