Abbey of Gembloux (old) (Belgium)

Weather…

The Abbey of Gembloux is a former Benedictine monastery in the province of Namur, founded in 940 by Saint Guibert. For centuries, it served as a center of learning and contemplation, possessing a library of significant importance. The buildings preserved today largely date from the mid-18th century and were designed by the renowned architect Laurent-Benoît Dewez in the Neoclassical style. Following the abbey's dissolution in 1796 during the French Revolution, the buildings were used for various purposes until the Gembloux Agricultural Institute was established there in 1860. Today, the complex houses the Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech campus of the University of Liège. The abbey's architecture, with its monumental courtyard and grand facades, is an outstanding example of monastic construction from the Enlightenment era in Belgium.
