Castle of La Roche-en-Ardenne (Belgium)

Weather…

The Castle of La Roche-en-Ardenne (Château de La Roche-en-Ardenne) is one of Belgium's most easy on the eye and imposing fortress ruins, perched spectacularly on a steep slate cliff overlooking a narrow bend in the Ourthe River. The origins of the site date back to the Gallo-Roman period, though the formidable remains visible today were primarily constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries. Thanks to its outstanding strategic location in the heart of the Ardennes, the castle was a fiercely contested stronghold, controlled at various times by the Counts of Namur, the Dukes of Burgundy, and later by the troops of French King Louis XIV, who heavily fortified it in the late 17th century. Although the fortress was abandoned following a devastating fire in 1721 and suffered extensive damage during the heavy Allied carpet bombings of the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, it continues to captivate thousands of visitors today. The dark cellars, deep dungeons, and the eerie legend of the ghost 'Berthe' lend the ruins an unparalleled, mystical atmosphere.
