Castle of Corroy-le-Château (Belgium)

Weather…

The Castle of Corroy-le-Château situated near Gembloux is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Belgium and Northern Europe. Built around 1270 by the Count of Vianden it was designed as a strategic stronghold to defend the southern border of the Duchy of Brabant. The castle's architecture follows a strict quadrangular plan featuring four massive circular corner towers and a wide protective moat which remains filled with water. Remarkably the fortress escaped the common trend of being modernized into a residential palace during the Baroque era thus retaining its authentic 13th-century military character. For over 700 years the castle has remained almost continuously within the same noble lineage which has played a crucial role in maintaining its structural integrity and historical collections. The interior showcases a wealth of period furniture ancestral portraits and historical documents that chronicle the family's legacy. Today it stands as a prime example of high medieval defensive design and is frequently used for historical reenactments and cultural tours.
