Belfry of Gembloux (Belgium)

Weather…

The Belfry of Gembloux located in the heart of Namur province is a historic tower that has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005. Unlike many other belfries it was originally the tower of the Church of Saint-Sauveur founded in the 10th century but became a civic symbol after the church was demolished in the 18th century. The structure is built from dark local stone and features a distinctive bulbous spire which was meticulously restored after a major fire in 1905. For centuries the belfry represented the municipal rights and independence of the citizens of Gembloux often in contrast to the power of the local Benedictine abbey. It currently houses a magnificent carillon consisting of 47 bells which is used for public concerts and celebrations throughout the year. As a central landmark of Gembloux the belfry remains a testament to the town's medieval layout and its long-standing tradition of bell-ringing and civic governance.
