Villers Abbey (Belgium)

Weather…

Villers Abbey, positioned in a wooded valley in the province of Walloon Brabant, stands as one of the most magnificent examples of medieval Cistercian architecture in Europe. It was founded in 1146 by monks from Clairvaux Abbey at the invitation of the knight Gauthier de Marbais. During the 12th and 13th centuries, the monastery experienced its golden age, acquiring extensive landholdings and housing hundreds of monks and lay brothers. The imposing ruins, which include the majestic Gothic abbey church with its soaring vaulted arches, the refectory, and the cloisters, vividly reflect the enormous wealth and spiritual influence of the order. Following centuries of prosperity interspersed with periods of pillaging, the French Revolution led to the abbey's definitive suppression in 1796. Today, the carefully preserved stonework, surrounded by medicinal herb gardens and a vineyard, has a captivating journey into medieval monastic life and architectural mastery.
