Grimbergen is a scenic and historically rich municipality in Flemish Brabant, bordering directly on the Brussels-Capital Region to the north. The animated heart of the municipality is the Premonstratensian Abbey of Grimbergen, an imposing monastery founded in 1128. The majestic Baroque abbey church, with its striking onion-domed tower, is the town's most famous landmark. Internationally, the name Grimbergen is renowned primarily for the highly esteemed abbey beer of the same name, whose brewing tradition is closely intertwined with the history of the monks. The municipality's symbol, the phoenix, commemorates the repeated destruction and reconstruction of the abbey over the centuries. Another jewel of Grimbergen is the Mira Public Observatory, one of the most active public observatories in Belgium, as well as the historic Prinsenbos, a wooded castle park featuring the ruins of the 17th-century Prinsenkasteel.
